A man accused of killing his mother and stepfather at their Powder Springs home Saturday opened fire because he was “tired of them” and “wanted to be alone,” according to warrants obtained Monday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Martin Duberry, 31, called 911 and said he shot Monica Brookins, 72, and John Wells, 73, after they returned home from celebrating Wells’ birthday, the warrants stated.
“Once both victims arrived back home, Monica walked in the door first and (Duberry) then shot her in the head,” an officer stated in the warrant. “As she fell to the ground, said accused then proceeded to shoot John in the head.”
Officers were called about 12:30 p.m. Saturday to the home in the 3200 block of Yoshino Terrace about a domestic incident and found the victims each suffering from several gunshot wounds, police said in a statement. They were taken to a hospital in critical condition but later died.
Duberry lived at the home and remains in custody as detectives continue to investigate the “circumstances surrounding this tragic domestic incident,” police said.
According to the warrants, Duberry said he didn’t know how many times he shot his parents after the initial bullets struck them in the head. Police said it was later determined Brookins was shot four times in the abdomen, and Wells was struck three times, including twice in the head.
No other details were released by police about what led to the gunfire. Investigators were seen carrying evidence from the two-story home, near Elliot Road and C.H. James Parkway.
Duberry was booked into the Cobb jail on two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He is being held without bond.
“At this time, there is still no threat to the community, and no additional suspects are being sought,” police said. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation allows.”
