As beverage professionals, we understand the importance of balance and moderation. If you’re looking to stay soberish, hemp-derived, THC-infused drinks are a fairly recent and very popular addition to the nonalcoholic beverage category. Since these beverages do provide a mild high, they are not a great option for those seeking a fully sober lifestyle, but they’re a fun way to unwind when alcohol isn’t on the agenda.
These beverages are available in varying strengths; 5 milligrams of THC seems to be the most common. Several producers also offer 2.5-milligram and 10-milligram versions. In liquid form, the effects can come on more quickly than with edible options, so be cautious in your consumption.
Georgia’s Hemp Farming Act went into effect Oct. 1, paving the way for beverage companies to start producing and selling THC- and CBD-infused beverages in the state. Governed by the state Department of Agriculture, retailers must hold a license to sell these beverages legally, and customers must be 21 or older to purchase them. They’re available at stores that sell wine and beer, as well as shops offering nonalcoholic beverages.
Generally, these drinks are reminiscent of hard seltzers and, as is the case with that category, the quality can vary dramatically. Here are three standouts:
Louie Louie. We think this is the most delicious of the THC- and CBD-infused beverages. At 50 calories and 13 grams of sugar, it has the highest carb count on our list, but a little extra sugar goes a long way toward a more pleasant mouthfeel and a delightful taste. It’s available in three flavors, but cucumber ginger is at the top of our list. Currently it’s available only in 5-milligram strength. drinklouielouie.com
Climbing Kites. These are infused sparkling waters, akin to a LaCroix. They’re refreshing and light, with zero sugar and zero calories. There are four flavors available, and they come in 2.5-, 5- and 10-milligram THC and CBD strengths. Peach prickly pear (5 milligrams) and mixed berry (10 milligrams) stood out to us, but all the flavors were pleasant, with no unpleasant, artificial aftertaste. climbingkites.com
Nowadays. This drink’s versatile THC infusions are available as spritzy canned drinks in multiple flavors. You also can get them in bottles, for making your own inventive concoctions, including 2-ounce “shot” bottles, perfect for on-the-go enjoyment. Both versions are available at varying strengths. While the original flavor lands somewhere between the Zima beverage and Sweet-Tarts candy, the spicy lime is a fun version that margarita and ranch water enthusiasts could get behind. trynowadays.com
