One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash that blocked I-20 West just outside downtown Atlanta for hours early Wednesday morning.

Atlanta police said the driver of a Ford Expedition was killed in the collision that happened around 3 a.m. at the Lee Street overpass in the West End neighborhood. Officials did not report any additional injuries.

The fatal crash happened after an initial wreck involving a Ford Focus and a Ford Ranger pickup truck, police said. That collision caused westbound traffic to slow to a stop, including a tractor-trailer.

Just moments later, the Ford Expedition crashed into the back of the semi, according to authorities. Its driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The interstate was blocked off as traffic investigators worked the scene, which spanned a large area. Debris was scattered across the interstate.

Lanes reopened once the scene was cleared around 7:30 a.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
