Three people, including a 10-year-old, were hospitalized after a multivehicle wreck in Lithia Springs that had all lanes of I-20 eastbound blocked Monday afternoon for about three hours.

The wreck occurred at about 1:30 p.m. west of Thornton Road and impacted both sides of the interstate, authorities said. Lanes reopened just after 4:30 p.m.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a dump truck was traveling westbound on the interstate that afternoon when it experienced a front left tire failure, causing the truck to veer out of its lane and strike another vehicle. The dump truck then crossed the center median and went into the eastbound lanes, where it hit three other vehicles, the GSP said.

“One of the impacted vehicles overturned due to the collision,” GSP spokesperson Ed Starling said in a statement.

After first responders arrived at the scene, Starling said the 10-year-old and two other people were taken to a separate hospitals for treatment.

The Georgia Department of Transportation map showed eastbound traffic backed up to Fairburn Road at 4:15 p.m.

Starling said the interstate was closed until the late afternoon to allow for debris removal and the “continued investigation” into the crash.
