College Park police shot a man, who they said had a firearm, Tuesday evening as he ran from officers investigating an earlier shooting, according to authorities.

Dwight Jaheem Robinson-Fikes, 31, of Jonesboro, was rushed to a hospital and described as stable Wednesday, according to the GBI, which has been asked to investigate the shooting by police. Officials said the man is a suspect in a shooting at an apartment complex near West Fayetteville Road.

College Park police said officers got a call about a person shot at the Somersby Apartments on West Fayetteville Road around 7 p.m. When they arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to her abdomen, officials said. She was alert when taken to a hospital. An update on her status was not provided.

Witnesses at the scene gave officers a description of the suspect, and an officer later spotted someone fitting that description walking on Norman Drive at Crystal Lane, authorities said. That area is about a quarter-mile from the complex.

When an officer tried to make contact with Robinson-Fikes, he immediately ran away, prompting a chase, officials said. At some point during the encounter, authorities said the suspect pulled out a gun, prompting the officer to shoot him.

Robinson-Fikes was wounded in the torso, police said.

No other details about the incident have been released by the GBI or by College Park police.

Once the GBI finishes its investigation, the case file will be given to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the findings should be presented to a grand jury.

So far this year, the GBI has been asked to investigate 42 officer-involved shootings. As of the same date last year, that number was 46.

Anyone with information on the shooting that left the woman injured is asked to contact College Park police at 404-761-3131. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the College Park Tip Line at 404-768-8664 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
