Impending winter weather has prompted the cancellation of some events and closures in the metro area, including at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and King Center.
North Georgia and metro Atlanta will be under a winter storm watch starting Friday morning. The National Weather Service cautioned residents to expect “significant accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain that will lead to hazardous travel conditions.”
The winter storm watch will be in effect from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.
Notable events in town, like the Fox Theatre’s showing of the Broadway production “& Juliet” and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s “Coucheron + the Four Seasons” are still scheduled for Friday and this weekend. Organizers for both said they’re closely monitoring the forecast.
Fernbank Museum’s “Fernbank After Dark” is also still on for Friday evening. However, a museum representative said their team is anticipating possible impacts on their operations and will make necessary updates closer to Friday
Below is a running list of confirmed closures and cancellations in the area:
Events
Atlanta Botanical Garden
The garden’s Midtown and Gainesville locations will be closed on Friday due to the winter storm watch, a representative confirmed Wednesday. Its “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” event Friday evening is also canceled. Ticket purchases will be automatically refunded. Guests are encouraged to check atlantabg.org. for any updates.
King Center
The King Center’s MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards, which were scheduled for Saturday at the Omni Atlanta Hotel, is postponed to Jan. 18. This year’s honorees include Jennifer Lewis and Black Voters Matter. Eric Benét and Jennifer Holliday are among the performers.
Inauguration of DeKalb County CEO
Two events to formally inaugurate new DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, who took office on New Year’s Day, are being rescheduled from Friday, according to the county. The oath of office ceremony will now take place Jan. 17 at Emory University and the ecumenical breakfast will take place March 22 at Emory.
Medical closures
Atlanta clinics run by Grady Health System and the Fulton and DeKalb County Boards of Health will be closed Friday due to the winter storm, they said. DeKalb County said it is also canceling all the board’s outreach events for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Grady Memorial Hospital will remain open. It said in a press release that it has prepared to protect against power outages and supply shortages. All Grady’s clinics and neighborhood health centers will close, though.
All three organizations said appointments that were slated for that day would be rescheduled. Fulton County Board of Health clinic patients will need to contact the clinic at 770-520-7500 to reschedule their appointments.
