After a freezing weekend, metro Atlantans are getting milder temperatures for Christmas. But if you’re traveling, keep an eye on the weather at your destination, as winter storms could spell trouble.

Temps in metro Atlanta on Christmas Eve and Christmas will top out near 60 degrees with not much rain in sight.

Highs on Tuesday afternoon will reach the mid to upper 50s, so it’ll still be a bit chilly, but there will be plenty of sunshine with a slight wind.

For those traveling far away for the holidays: Northeastern states including New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are experiencing light snow and a wintry mix Tuesday morning with some areas expecting a white Christmas.

Some rain is expected in the Western part of the country later today, too, with snowfall expected in the higher elevations. Parts of East Texas are expected to get some storms on Christmas Eve and Thursday while experiencing “unseasonably mild to warm temperatures” this week with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday night temperatures will plummet again across metro Atlanta. Overnight lows will fall into the 30s, but temps climb back to near 60 degrees on Wednesday. Christmas Day will be mostly sunny with some clouds.

It’ll be a bit breezy, too, with winds expected to blow between five to 10 mph and gusts as high as 15 mph.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said Thursday will be a “day of transition” as it brings more moisture and eventually some rain later in the week. The chance for rain will continue to increase into the weekend with a 70% chance for precipitation by Saturday night, according to the NWS.
