Spring is just around the corner, but Thursday’s weather is a chilly reminder that it’s not here yet.
Light snow may cause slick roads in the North Georgia mountains Thursday morning, while overnight freezing temperatures and wind gusts are making it feel like winter in metro Atlanta.
Flurries are possible as far south as Atlanta but are unlikely as the sun brings temperatures up to the low 50s by the afternoon. Snowflakes and sleet were spotted in the city overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
From Wednesday evening through 10 a.m., those in mountain elevations above 2,500 feet, could see snow accumulations up to one inch, according to the NWS.
Gusty winds up to 40 mph are making the air feel cold in metro Atlanta. While temperatures are in the high 30s, the wind chill makes it feel like the 20s, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“The story is the wind: really gusty, really strong this morning,” he said. “It feels like 28 in Atlanta.”
A freeze warning is in effect until 10 a.m. for parts of northwest Georgia and Atlanta. Once the freeze warning lifts, all of metro Atlanta will be under a frost advisory until Friday morning, according to the NWS.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the high 60s over the weekend. Atlanta may see some showers Saturday night and Sunday morning, according to the NWS.
