Some grocery stores around metro Atlanta are limiting the number of eggs customers can buy due to a shortage caused by massive outbreaks of bird flu at industrial egg farms.

At Trader Joe’s in Midtown, a sign at each register Monday said customers were limited to one carton of eggs each. The grocery chain only sells eggs by the dozen or half-dozen.

Costco is limiting customers to three packages each, Channel 2 Action News reported. The membership warehouse typically sells eggs in cartons of two- and four-dozen.

Kroger has not issued a blanket restriction on egg purchases but acknowledged that some stores are independently limiting the number of eggs customers can buy, according to the Progressive Grocer. The egg sections at some Atlanta-area Kroger locations have been sparsely stocked for several days.

Similarly, Publix has not added restrictions to egg purchases, though a limited selection of eggs was available at some stores.

German grocery store chains Aldi and Lidl have both added limits to egg purchases. Aldi is restricting customers to purchasing a total of two dozen eggs, while Lidl allows customers to purchase two cartons each. Lidl’s cartons contain either 12 or 18 eggs.

A Walmart spokeswoman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the nation’s largest retailer was only adding restrictions to the purchase of 60-egg cartons. Customers can buy only two 60-count cartons at a time “to help ensure more customers can have access to eggs.”

“Although supply is very tight, we’re working with suppliers to try and help meet customer demand, while striving to keep prices as low as possible,” the spokeswoman said.

Signs in the egg section at Sprouts Farmer’s Market announced a limit of four-dozen per customer Tuesday evening.

Grocery stores began placing limits on egg purchases after Norcross-based Waffle House made headlines for adding a surcharge of 50 cents per egg.

Despite the egg shortage and resulting high prices, demand remains strong as Americans consume a record high number of eggs, CEO of the American Egg Board Emily Metz told the Progressive Grocer.
