Gusty winds are ushering in cold air that could bring a few snow flurries to the Georgia mountains Wednesday night and freezing temperatures into some metro Atlanta counties.
Much of the western half of North Georgia is under a freeze warning from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. The eastern half of the metro Atlanta area is under a frost advisory.
The chance for snow comes after widespread storms that arrived late Tuesday smacked Georgia, downing trees and cutting power.
A wind advisory is in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS. Sustained winds from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected across the northern half of the state. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 degrees are also expected overnight.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the Weather Service warns. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result … Use caution.”
The cold front will send lows into the 30s overnight.
The chilly air, combined with spotty showers Wednesday night, could bring a few late-winter snowflakes to Georgia’s higher elevations, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. He noted it could be “cold enough and enough moisture for a few mountain flurries.”
Negligible, if any, accumulation is expected, but the highest ridgetops may see just over an inch of snowfall, the NWS reports.
The cold follows severe storms that rumbled across the state, bringing up to an inch of much-needed rain. Winds toppled trees and power lines, causing several thousand outages, mostly in North Georgia.
As of 5 p.m., Georgia Power’s outage map showed roughly 2,500 customers still without service. Just over 1,000 Georgia EMC customers remained without power. That is down from about 26,000 outages statewide ahead of sunrise.

The cold will persist into Thursday morning, keeping the high temp in the 50s. The good news is it will be a bright and mostly sunny day, and by Friday temps will be back into the 60s.
