Two people were found dead inside an abandoned church after a fire in northwest Atlanta late Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Atlanta fire officials said they got a call at around 11:30 p.m. about a church fully engulfed in flames in the 600 block of Cameron M. Alexander Boulevard. The site was the former home to the Amazing Grace Christian Community Church, according to online property records.

The blaze initially prevented firefighters from searching the building, but once the fire was under control, they found two people inside, the fire department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They were declared dead at the scene.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News that the building had been deserted for years. It sits just across the street from another church.

It is not clear how long the building had been vacant. Fulton County records show it sold for $1.2 million to a residential property management company in June 2021.

State Fire Marshal investigators were called in to determine the cause of the blaze.

No other details have been released by officials.
