A Coweta County man was shot by sheriff’s deputies late Thursday night after he barricaded himself inside his bedroom and threatened to shoot them, authorities said.
Ronald West, 42, was shot by Coweta deputies when he charged at them and attempted to stab one of them, the GBI said in a statement Friday. West did not fire any shots, the GBI confirmed, and it is not clear what type of weapon he used in the attempted stabbing.
According to the GBI’s statement, West “rushed toward officers with an object, attempting to stab the deputies.”
He was taken to an Atlanta hospital, though the sheriff’s office and GBI both declined to provide any information about West’s condition. No deputies were injured during the confrontation.
They were originally called to the home on Hawthorne Drive in Newnan around 11:45 p.m. Thursday after getting reports of a domestic disturbance between West and his parents, the GBI said. When they arrived, West barricaded himself in his bedroom, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies opened West’s door, he charged at them and attempted to stab at least one deputy, the GBI said. As the deputies fell back, one of them fired and hit West, the state agency said. Deputies immediately began rendering first aid, according to the sheriff’s office.
This is the first shooting involving Georgia law enforcement officers in more than 10 days, GBI records show. There were five officer-involved shootings in the state from Sept. 3-8.
The shooting in Coweta is the 66th in Georgia involving law enforcement this year.
