A man who pulled out a firearm was shot by a deputy Thursday while law enforcement officers were trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant in DeKalb County, the GBI said.
Officials with the U.S. Marshals Service were in the 5800 block of Covington Highway around 4 p.m., trying to execute an arrest warrant for the man, state officials said. The GBI identified him as Marquiece Beadle, 34, and said he had active warrants for murder and sale of a controlled substance from the Chamblee Police Department.
When authorities approached an apartment on Covington Highway, the GBI said Beadle ran out of a unit and “encountered” a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy.
Beadle is then accused of pulling out a handgun. The state agency said a deputy fired their weapon, striking Beadle.
Beadle was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not provided. No officers were injured in the incident.
According to an incident report, Beadle was wanted in the December 2023 death of Cody Weathersbee at a Chamblee apartment complex on Gentrys Walk off North Peachtree Road. Weathersbee bought narcotics that contained fentanyl from Beadle, and officers found him dead in his bedroom during a wellness check after his parents became concerned that they were not able to get in contact with him, the report details.
The U.S. Marshals Service asked the GBI to investigate the officer-involved shooting, the eighth such incident the agency has been asked to look into this year. All findings from the independent investigation will be turned over to the DeKalb District Attorney’s Office.
