An 18-year-old was killed after refusing to follow the commands of Clayton County police officers while running from a vacant home in Rex on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Clayton police said Hakim Al-Nas was carrying a weapon when he fled from the vacant house. Al-Nas did not drop the weapon as he “ran toward officers who were searching for other individuals,” and the officer giving the commands shot and killed him, police said.
Officers were called to Chippewa Drive around 4:30 p.m. about a report of several people seen entering the house, police said. Officers surrounded the home and told the suspects to exit the building.
Police said Al-Nas left through the back and ran toward some of the officers at the scene before he was shot.
According to the GBI, two of the suspects were seen climbing out of a rear window, though an agency spokeswoman did not specify if one of them was Al-Nas.
After the shooting, the three other suspects were taken into custody, Clayton police said: two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old.
A handgun was found at the scene, according to the GBI, but the state agency did not say if Al-Nas was armed during the encounter.
The officer who shot the teenager has been placed on paid administrative leave, and the GBI is investigating the deadly use of force. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Clayton District Attorney’s Office for review, the GBI said.
