A bystander was injured Wednesday afternoon after two passengers got into a shootout on a MARTA bus in Clayton County, authorities said.
The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. as the two suspects were exiting the bus at Garden Walk Boulevard and Ga. 85, according to MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher. The area is located near I-75 and just north of Riverdale.
Fisher said the two passengers shot each other and “the gunfight continued down the street.” The bystander and one of the shooters are both said to be stable after they were each shot in the leg, officials said.
According to Fisher, the two shooters were detained by Clayton and MARTA police. Their names were not released.
“The operator and other passengers were unharmed and picked up by another bus on the route,” Fisher added.
It was the second shooting on a MARTA bus over the past week. On Monday, the third suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 47-year-old MARTA bus driver Leroy Ramos. An alleged dispute over the $2.50 fare led to the Jan. 3 shooting at the Decatur station on Church Street.
A bystander was also taken to the hospital following that incident. Police said they suffered a “superficial wound” after a bullet ricocheted.
“Our family is enduring this senseless act of violence firsthand and mourns the loss of a soul that was precious and so priceless to us, 3 days into the new year,” the Ramos family stated on a GoFundMe page. “We allowed the stages of grief to sink in, and we are raging for a change, not for violence!”
