One suspect was injured and a second was arrested Monday night in Clayton County after a high-speed chase and gunbattle with sheriff’s deputies.
A man was shot after the multi-county chase that led to a shootout with pursuing deputies from Fayette and Clayton counties, the GBI said. A second suspect, a woman who was a passenger and is accused of firing multiple shots at deputies, was arrested, according to the state agency.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
When the GBI shared details about the incident Tuesday, the agency included the injured man’s name. Later the same day, the agency said he had been misidentified and investigators were working to determine his identity.
The pursuit began in Fayette when deputies tried to pull over a Jeep on Ga. 85 North around 7 p.m., the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Investigators believed the SUV was stolen and had been linked to a series of car break-ins, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Jeep did not stop for deputies and instead sped away, the sheriff’s office said. Once the SUV crossed the county line, Clayton deputies joined the chase.
While one suspect drove the SUV, the passenger began firing at the pursuing deputies, the Fayette sheriff’s office said. A gunbattle ensued and the suspects’ car hit several other cars on Tara Boulevard, the GBI said.
The suspects eventually crashed at Winding Way Lane and more shots were fired, the sheriff’s office said. The driver ran from the Jeep and crossed several lanes of traffic, the GBI said. He was shot by a deputy as the pursuing law enforcement officers tried to catch him, according to the state agency.
The woman was taken into custody at the scene, officials said. She was later identified as 26-year-old Maiya Gulley and appeared before the Clayton magistrate Tuesday, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Gulley is charged with a half-dozen counts related to the chase and shooting, online jail records show, including aggravated assault against a police officer, obstruction, reckless conduct and multiple gun charges.
At her hearing Tuesday, Gulley said she did not shoot anyone and apologized to the deputies involved, Channel 2 reported. The magistrate judge replied that dashboard camera footage submitted as evidence showed Gulley firing multiple shots at deputies.
Gulley remains in jail without bond, court records show.
The GBI said it would turn over its findings to the Clayton District Attorney’s Office when complete.
The scene of the shooting is just south of Jonesboro, a little less than two miles from the county courthouse.
This is the ninth shooting involving law enforcement officers investigated by the GBI in 2025. With eight such incidents in January, Georgia doubled the number of officer-involved shootings reported in the first month of 2024.
