A MARTA bus driver who was fatally shot Friday evening in Decatur had been working in Atlanta for only a few months, officials said.
The driver was identified by police as 47-year-old Leroy Ramos. He was hired by MARTA in October.
The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732, a labor union in the U.S. and Canada, said Ramos was a father of two daughters and a son. Local 732 President Britt Dunams said in a news release that Ramos had recently moved from New York.
“Our members should be able to go to work and come home safely each day,” Dunams said.
The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. near the Decatur station on Church Street. The bus driver was shot during a dispute over the fare, MARTA police spokesperson Payson Schwin said.
Two people accused in the shooting were arrested and charged with murder, officials confirmed, and a third suspect remains at large. A description of the third suspect was not provided.
A bystander also was injured when a bullet ricocheted and was taken to a hospital with a “superficial wound,” Schwin said.
