The Morgan County Planning Commission approved a request for an event facility at the Georgia Safari Conservation Park.

The facility is to be located on 436 acres in unincorporated Morgan County and not on 92 acres of safari property located within the City of Madison.

The park spent years in the planning stage before opening earlier this year with safari representatives making a previous application for an event facility in 2015.

“Hallelujah, we come before you now with the park opened,” said Mike Conrads, spokesperson for the park. He said the event facility “is just an add-on we’ve been talking about since the very beginning.”

Commissioner Constance Booth said she had heard many good things about the park and described it as an asset to the community.

Since the park is being developed in phases, the commission agreed to allow the event facility to grow in phases that would not require reapplication for each phase. According to documentation presented at the meeting, the initial phase will only involve open air events with temporary structures.

Traffic to the facility will only utilize Monticello Highway and not Clack Road. The use of Clack Road had been a major concern by the commission when the facility was first discussed. The road will continue to be used by employees and service vehicles.

All recommendations by the planning commission require final approval by the Morgan County Board of Commissioners.
