Donald Trump was sworn in on Monday as the 47th president of the United States, capping a remarkable comeback bid for the White House.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance took the oath of office inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Frigid temperatures forced the festivities indoors for the first time since 1985, when Ronald Reagan assumed a second term.

The AJC Politics team in Washington captured the day’s developments and what they mean for Georgia.

Trump pardons Jan. 6 defendants, including 44 from Georgia

President Donald Trump fulfilled a campaign promise on Monday and issued sweeping pardons that erased four years of federal investigations and prosecutions of the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

While the president said the order covered around 1,500 people, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, nearly 1,600 people have been charged in the U.S. Capitol riot, including 44 people with Georgia ties

Trump signs executive orders at Capital One Arena

President Donald Trump turned his rally at a downtown Washington arena into a signing ceremony for executive actions that his new administration is taking to institute major policy changes.

He began signing executive orders onstage as thousands of supporters cheered, melding the theatrics of his campaign rallies with the formal powers of the presidency.

Trump froze the issuing of new regulations, asserted his control over the federal workforce and withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.

Dozens of executive orders have already been prepared for his signature to clamp down on border crossings, increase fossil fuel development and end diversity and inclusion programs across the federal government.

Ossoff, Warnock back bill named for slain Georgia nursing student Laken Riley

The U.S. Senate has passed legislation named for a murdered Georgia nursing student that would give federal immigration agencies broad authority to detain undocumented immigrants accused of a crime.

The Laken Riley Act was approved Monday with the help of 12 Democrats, including Georgia Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. The final tally was 64-35.

The bill is named after a nursing student slain on the University of Georgia's campus whose murder by a Venezuelan man last year became a rallying cry for Trump’s White House campaign.

Trump has made a broad crackdown on illegal immigration his top priority. And Congress, with Republicans in control and some Democrats willing to go along, is showing it's ready to follow suit.

Jason Aldean, Nelly to perform at inaugural balls

County music star Jason Aldean and rapper Nelly will be among the performers at tonight's inauguration festivities in Washington.

Aldean, a Macon native, and Nelly, who lives in Atlanta, are set to headline the Liberty Ball.

Many musicians declined to participate in Trump's first inauguration. But that's not the case this time around.

Carrie Underwood sang "God Bless America" at the swearing-in. And the three inaugural balls have drawn musical heavy hitters.

Nelly, known for the hit "Hot in Herre," defended his decision to perform, saying it was not an endorsement of Trump.

Here’s what a second Trump administration could mean for Georgia

President Donald Trump campaigned on bringing about massive change and, if he gets his way, his agenda would transform things such as the economy, immigration and climate policy.

On the campaign trail, Trump was often vague about specific policies. Instead, he frequently talked in sound bites, slogans and pledges.

From tariffs to deportations and Medicaid to electric vehicles, Donald Trump’s agenda could bring massive change. Read more HERE.

WATCH: President Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico. Is that possible?

In his inaugural address, President Donald Trump suggested that the Gulf of Mexico should be renamed the “Gulf of America.”

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene recently introduced legislation to change the name of the body of water.

Although the U.S. could change the name of the gulf, other countries may or may not recognize the name change.
