Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right hamstring before Monday’s series opener against the Cardinals at Truist Park.
The injured list stint was backdated to April 18.
Strider strained his hamstring when he was playing catch before Monday’s game.
“I was going to see [media for pregame availability] this afternoon, and he came up the stairs, and I asked him ‘What’s the matter?,’ and he pulled a hamstring playing catch,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.
“He was doing his normal catch. It wasn’t accelerated or anything. It was one of those freak things. You can do everything right and still have things happen.”
Snitker said there was no incident such as a shoe slip or a cleat getting caught. Strider was slated to start Tuesday’s second game against the Cardinals.
“He was just playing catch,” Snitker said. “[It was] just catch that he plays every day. He was just feeling his arm the day before he pitches.”
Strider underwent an MRI, but Snitker did not know the results Monday.
“It’s gonna be some kind of an opener, but it will be one of the bullpen guys,” Snitker said.
Strider, who tore is right UCL early last season, was activated from the injured list and made his 2025 debut on April 16 at Toronto. He allowed two runs on five hits and tallied one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.
Snitker said he doesn’t know what precautions the Braves will have to take with an injury after returning from such a long rehabilitation.
“I think it’ll be a few days to see where he’s at when they start doing the tests to see how he feels tomorrow and the next day,” Snitker said.
“They’ll treat him up, and I think they’ll just have to play it by ear as we go forward. Hopefully, this was just a weird thing that heals up really [well]. With these injuries you never know how long it’s going to take.”
The Braves recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Petersen to Atlanta in a corresponding move.
