MOBILE, Ala. — Former Georgia Tech tight end Jackson Hawes has been one of the standouts for the American Team during the practices for the Senior Bowl, which is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
“It’s been great,” Hawes told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s been fun. I’ve been telling people that these days are really long. Reminds me a lot of fall camp and stuff. It just been a blessing and honor to be out here, sharing the field with some of the best players in the nation.”
Hawes, who transferred to Tech from Yale, was used mostly as a blocker. He’s looked fluid when running his pass routes and has caught the ball with his hands on Tuesday and Wednesday.
That’s been impressive to the onlookers, which includes scouts, coaches and general managers from several NFL teams.
“Good hands,” Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian told The AJC. “Good size. Doesn’t move as athletically as some, but he’s also an excellent blocker. So, there is a role for him for sure. Those guys are hard to find. Guys that can catch and have some savvy in the passing game and still be good blockers.”
Hawes, who is 6-foot-4 and 252 pounds with a 79-inch wing span, played at Yale from 2019 to 2023. He caught 35 passes for 371 yards and six touchdowns at Yale.
“That’s one of the biggest opportunities for me this week, not just to showcase the blocking, but also the routes and the catching ability,” Hawes said. “That’s something that I might not have been able to display as much in college.”
The move from the Ivy League to playing in the ACC has impressed some scouts, too.
“It was totally different,” Hawes said. “The locker rooms were totally different. I feel like I attacked it head on. Just kind of took each day as it went. Tried to get to know as many guys as I could and grow those bonds as fast as I could because I was only there for a year. It was a really fun time.”
Hawes has enjoyed the interview process.
“Just a bunch of background stuff,” Hawes said. “A lot of stuff about football. Getting to know you. Where did you grow up? What did you like to do as a kid? Why I chose Yale? Why I chose Georgia Tech? The most important one was why I love to play football.”
Hawes also has an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, which will be Feb. 27 through March 2 in Indianapolis.
