Georgia Tech takes the field one final time in 2024, to cap a season that began with practice in July and a trip to Dublin, Ireland, in August.
The Yellow Jackets won seven games over the past four months, including upsets of Florida State and Miami (ranked 10th and fourth, respectively, at the time) and a triumph over undefeated Duke. They lost five games in that span, including a three-point loss at Syracuse and 44-42 loss at rival Georgia, a contest that lasted eight overtimes.
Now, Tech faces Vanderbilt (6-6), a program which hasn’t made a bowl game since 2018 but had an overtime victory over Virginia Tech and a historic win over Alabama. The Commodores also lost to Georgia State by four, Missouri by three, Texas by three and LSU by seven.
Tech and Vandy last met in 2016. The two programs have never played on a neutral field, nor have they met in the postseason.

Series history: The Jackets lead the series 20-15-3, a series that dates to an 1892 meeting in Atlanta. The two teams have only met four times since 2002 after both programs were members of the SEC until Tech became an independent in 1964. Tech’s first game as an independent, actually, was Sept. 19, 1964 against the Commodores.
Tech also has hosted Vandy once for homecoming (Oct. 25, 1952), and its win over the ‘Dores on Aug. 31, 2002, was the program’s 400th.
The Jackets have not lost to Vanderbilt since 1941. They have gone 12-0-1 since — the two teams played to a 10-10 tie in 1965.
Tech and Vandy haven’t faced off since a 2016 meeting that the Jackets won 38-7 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Tech has held the rivalry’s unofficial cowbell trophy since.
