Two classifications have new top-ranked teams after previous No. 1 teams lost in the final week of the Georgia high school girls basketball regular season.

Pickens climbed to the top spot in Class 3A after previous No. 1 Fayette County lost to Trinity Christian 58-54. Pickens is 22-2 and riding a seven-game win streak heading into the Region 6-3A tournament this week. The Dragons will begin postseason play against Johnson-Gainesville at home Tuesday night.

Fayette County dropped to No. 5, an unusually harsh fall that’s a result of being in a classification that has perhaps more legitimate state championship contenders than any other. Fayette County fell in line behind Pickens, Luella, Jefferson and Baldwin.

In Class 2A, Josey and Thomson traded places in the top two spots, with Josey taking over at No. 1 after defeating the Bulldogs 55-37. Thomson won 61-49 in the first meeting between the teams Jan. 17, and they finished in a tie for first place in Region 4-2A. Both will begin region tournament play in the semifinals round Thursday at Thomson, which won the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed. Josey likely will draw sixth-ranked Butler in the semifinals.

The other six No. 1 teams held their spots for another week. They are North Paulding in Class 6A, River Ridge in 5A, Creekside in 4A, Banks County in A Division I, Wilcox County in A Division II, and Hebron Christian in 3A-A private. Creekside (25-0) is one of three undefeated girls teams, along with Class 6A No. 2 North Forsyth (25-0) and Class 4A No. 3 Warner Robins (23-0).

Trinity Christian is one of seven new teams in the rankings. The others are Carrollton in Class 6A, Coffee in 5A, Jackson-Atlanta in 4A, White County in 3A, Washington County in A Division I, and Calvary Day in 3A-A private. All except Coffee and Calvary Day had been ranked for much of the season but dropped out in recent weeks.

Falling out of the rankings this week were Lowndes, Pope, Harris County, Heritage-Ringgold, East Laurens, Greenforest Christian and Savannah Country Day.
