Two programs won their first state titles and another had its long championship streak come to an end at the Georgia High School Association’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatics Center.
Northview’s boys compiled 367.5 points and outdistanced second-place Westminster by 39 points in the Class 4A boys competition to earn the first team title in school history. The Titans’ girls team was a state champion in 2007.
Northview was led by sophomore Ashton Tan, who won individual titles in the 100-yard butterfly (49.37) and 200 individual medley (1:50.61) and was a member of winning teams in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Other Class 4A boys swimmers winning multiple events were Westminster’s Connor Christopherson (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle) and Marist’s Cannon Martenson (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle).
Marist’s girls had the biggest victory of the day, recording a meet-best 566 points and finishing 247 points ahead of second-place Blessed Trinity in Class 4A. It was the 12th state championship for the Marist girls and first since 2021. The War Eagles picked up victories in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, and Allie Donkar won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.47. Donkar also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team.
Midtown’s Sarah Paisley turned in the only record-breaking performance of the day with a time 48.47 in the 100 freestyle. She also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.34, falling just short of her state-record 22.25 from last year, and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Midtown finished in fifth place with 262 points.
Marist’s victory in the team competition ended Westminster’s streak of seven consecutive championships. The Wildcats got two individual titles from Greta Myers (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly) but finished fourth behind Marist, Blessed Trinity and Cambridge. Westminster has won 29 boys titles and 28 girls championships.
In the Class A-3A competition, Lovett’s girls team won its first championship in program history and Greater Atlanta Christian’s boys won their second.
Lovett’s Decker Stedman won the 500 freestyle (4:49.89) and Alexis Dalton won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.83), and both were members of the winning 400 freestyle relay team, along with Virginia Jane Hultgren and Lyla Nelson.
Abigail Heizer was a top performer for GAC, winning the 50 freestyle (22.98) and 100 freestyle (50.10) and swimming on the winning teams in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
GAC’s boys held off Wesleyan in another close contest, 286-263 to win their first state championship since 2010.
Sophomore James Sorensen had a big role in the Spartans’ success. He won the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.05 seconds for the Spartans’ only individual title of the day. He also finished second to Jefferson’s Kyle Davis in the 100 butterfly, swam on the winning 200 medley relay team and swam on the 200 freestyle relay team that finished second.
Wesleyan got individual titles from Eric Xu (200 individual medley) and Max Perry (50 freestyle) and won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
The state meet will continue Friday at Georgia Tech with preliminaries in 5A and 6A and conclude Saturday with the finals in those classifications.
