Active autumn: Things to do with grandkids this week

Are you planning fall fun in the Atlanta area with your grandkids? There’s a certain appeal to viewing autumn leaves from the comfort of your car, but walking or even running through the scenery can give the family an energy boost. Plus, if you start with fresh air fun while the weather is cool, you may be more likely to continue with active pursuits into the cold months.

Here are active autumn options this week:

Smile Run 5K, Fun Run and Tot Trot

5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Etowah River Park: 600 Brown Industrial Pkwy, Canton.

Held in memory of Christian Egner, a young man who died in fall 2015 from asthma-related complications, the Smile Run raises funds for groups that support children with special needs. It may sound somber, but the late afternoon and early evening events are full of joy, laughter and exertion – and plentiful refreshments.

If anyone in the group is a competitive runner, the 5K is a qualifying race for the AJC Peachtree Road Race, and results are posted at btracetiming.com active.com, athlinks.com and rungeorgia.com. Be prepared to run or walk rain or shine. Register here.

Kids Boo Fest at Six Flags Over Georgia

6-11 p.m. Fridays, noon-11 p.m. Saturdays and noon-10 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 3. Included with one-day admission starting at $25. Six Flags Over Georgia, 275 Riverside Pkwy, Austell.

Here’s a lavish outing for fun grandparents and their relatives ages 2-12. It’s a gentle celebration, with kid-friendly rides and Halloween-themed extras at every turn. You may feel muscles you never knew you had the following day, but while you’re walking Kids Boo Fest, particularly Trick or Treat Town, the enchantment may make you forget you’re also getting exercise.
