Andrew Young released from the hospital, family says

The civil rights legend, former Atlanta mayor and ambassador is doing well, family members said.

A day after being rushed to the hospital, Ambassador Andrew Young was released Saturday evening, his brother said.

Walter Young, brother of the civil rights pioneer and former Atlanta mayor, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “He’s doing well. He’s going to be around for a long time.”

Young’s oldest daughter, Andrea Young, told the AJC on Friday her father fell ill and was taken to the hospital for tests. Andrea Young, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, said her father was in good spirits, joking with hospital workers.

Andrea Young said Saturday that her father “is doing well and has been released from the hospital. The family is grateful for the community’s prayers.”

Young, 92, was elected mayor of Atlanta in 1981 after serving for three years at the first Black U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
