An argument between two strangers outside Greenbriar Mall turned deadly when gunfire rang out Thursday, authorities said.
Atlanta police said an off-duty officer working an extra job at the mall in the 2800 block of Greenbriar Parkway heard shots around 4:45 p.m. The officer exited the mall through a door in the food court and immediately spotted the victim, spokesperson C. Butler told reporters near the scene.
A 28-year-old man was found unresponsive and suffering from several gunshot wounds on the sidewalk just steps outside the food court, Butler said.
“Our preliminary investigation has shown that this is a verbal dispute between strangers that escalated into gunfire,” Butler said.
Officials said they don’t know the circumstances of the argument.
Police initially said the victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later stated he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A suspected shooter was observed by the off-duty officer, detained and taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, according to officials.
“If he hadn’t been here, who knows, we might not have a suspect, but thankfully he was here to detain a possible suspect,” Butler said about the off-duty officer.
Caleb Deangelo Kirksey was booked into the Fulton County Jail overnight on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
An arrest warrant reveals Kirksey had two handguns on him during the shooting.
In June, two men who had been shot were found at the mall. Police said they drove there seeking medical attention after being injured at a townhome about a half-mile away.
