NEW YORK — Hawks guard Trae Young’s night at Barclays Center was over early.

Young suffered a right knee sprain in the first quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.

The injury occurred when Hawks teammate Mouhamed Gueye rolled up on Young’s knee with 2:09 to play in the first quarter.

Gueye was defending the Nets’ Noah Clowney, who extended his forearm. Gueye fell back into Young, who slid out of bounds and immediately grabbed his knee.

The Hawks called timeout, and Young ran over to the bench. He briefly returned to court, staying in for a defensive possession. He jogged back on offense but signaled to the bench with a shake of his head and went straight to the locker room.

Young finished the game with six points, one rebound, one assist and one block.

Hawks coach Quin Snyder provided an update on Young in his postgame media availability on Wednesday, following the 117-112 win.

“The most important thing is, it’s not his ACL, and he’s going to get an MRI tonight or tomorrow and make a determination from there,” Snyder said. “So not sure how long or what respect, but something that he’s going to hopefully be back from whenever possible.”

Young has been among the most durable players on the Hawks, having played in at least 60 games in all but one season during his first seven years.

The Hawks guard played 54 games during the 2023-24 season after he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left fifth (pinky) finger.

But Young has often suited up for games, even when dealing with bumps and bruises. Last season, the Hawks listed Young, who played 76 games, on multiple injury reports with an Achilles injury.

“He didn’t want to come out of the game. He’s such a competitor,” Snyder said. “He takes a lot of pride in being available. There’s been a lot of times in the time that we’ve been together where he’s banged up and he goes out and plays, and you saw that tonight too. He tried to stay in there.”
