Never mind the weather: Things to do with grandkids this week

Savvy Atlanta-area grandparents planning outings with their grandchildren follow the weather forecast closely as if they’re all farmers or golfers. Harsh air quality, blistering high temps, or severe storms can all threaten those treasured early fall activities.

Of course, the top priority is staying safe – even indoor events should be avoided in severe weather conditions. But if you’d like to take a break from fretting about if the weather will cooperate with your plans this week, try one of these fun events that doesn’t rely on moderate temperatures or sunny skies:

Monster Mini Golf Marietta

Noon-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, noon-10 p.m Friday-Saturday, noon-8 p.m. Sunday. $10-$14 mini golf, packages with arcade $19, plus virtual reality, $27. Monster Mini Golf, Town Center Market, 2505 Chastain Meadows Pkwy, Marietta.

So, this kid-friendly outing is a little different than the mini golf courses you may have played at the shore or in the mountains as a child. For one thing, it’s indoors where rain or heat can’t reach you. For another, you play in black light with glow-in-the-dark artwork and monsters moving and talking as you putt and groan about bad shots. There’s also a King Kong virtual reality experience and gaming arcade if you want to extend the fun hours. There’s also a snack bar, so plan to be the indulgent grandparent there if your budget allows. Prepurchase attraction packages here.

Boomerang Play Center

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. 0-12 months $8.99, 1-14 $16.99, one adult free, additional adults $5.99. Boomerang, Amsterdam Walk, 560-A Amsterdam Avenue NE, Atlanta.

Here’s a way to have fun with the 0-2 set, toddlers, and tweens all at once. Billed as an “active entertainment center,” Boomerang emphasizes playing with a group and getting some exercise. Yes, in your day, you could go out in the neighborhood for this, but a morning or afternoon at this center is a fine substitute for today’s grandkids. Look for a robo-themed gargantuan play structure with climbing tubes and slides, a toddler play center for grandkids under 4, and a junior ninja warrior challenge for the tween set. And hey, you can play, too, except in the areas designated for the tots. Purchase tickets here.
