At least two people are dead and three others are in critical condition following a deadly wreck that blocked a busy intersection in Midtown Atlanta for several hours Monday.

The multivehicle crash happened at Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive at 10 a.m. and involved a Tesla and a Hino box truck.

According to police, a white 2020 Tesla drove through a red light at the intersection and struck the box truck. Police said the 21-year-old Tesla driver and a 23-year-old female passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as DeCarlo Carneal and Jordan Jessie, respectively, by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Three other people in the Tesla — a 22-year-old man, a 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman — were all taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to authorities.

Both the driver and the passenger of the truck were uninjured.

The Tesla appeared to get lodged under the truck, photos showed, leaving a large area of debris scattered on the road.

The area is next to the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Piedmont Park.
