Authorities have charged a 14-year-old in the deadly shooting of a younger child Saturday afternoon at a home in southeast Atlanta, officials said.

Cameron Coney, 12, was fatally shot at his home in the 1800 block of Lathrop Street, police said.

Atlanta police were called to the house just before 2 p.m. Cameron was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was eventually pronounced dead, authorities said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office previously said Cameron was 13 years old.

In a statement Saturday, investigators said they were questioning a “juvenile and adults” who were inside the home at the time of the shooting. On Sunday, Atlanta police said they charged a 14-year-old with murder.

The teen, whose name was not released, is being held at a youth detention center. It’s unclear how he knew the victim or what prompted the shooting.

Cameron’s death is the latest in a spate of recent shootings affecting youths across Atlanta.

Last weekend, 16-year-old Tianah Robinson was killed after being struck by a stray bullet inside Piedmont Park, investigators said. And 3-year-old Armani Lyons was fatally shot April 5 after being dropped off with a babysitter while his parent went to work, according to police. Two people have been charged with murder in the toddler’s shooting.

In an online fundraiser, Cameron’s family described him as a silly, playful child “who was known for making people laugh.” The third-oldest of four children, Cameron loved football and was a student at Atlanta’s Crawford Long Middle School, according to the fundraising page.

“What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that Cameron was shot in his own room, in the place where he should have felt the most safe — his home,” his family said. ”No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain."

Lathrop Street is a residential area off McDonough Boulevard and near the Thomasville Recreation Center.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the victim’s age is 12, according to his family, which corrected earlier reports by the medical examiner.
