Thunderstorms are rolling across Georgia to start the week as Atlanta prepares for the city’s last few days of FIFA World Cup festivities.

Heavy rain, which could lead to localized flooding, gusty winds and lightning are the main weather threats Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday also brings this week’s highest chance, about 75%, for rain in North Georgia. Chances diminish a bit by midweek and taper off before the weekend. Storms are most likely to pop up in the afternoons and evenings, the agency said.

“Multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected through midweek before the pattern returns to one more typical of summer,” according to the NWS.

Neither rain nor heat has deterred thousands of fans who have flocked to Centennial Olympic Park for the FIFA Fan Festival thus far or to Atlanta Stadium, which will host one more World Cup match at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The last two days of the festival will take place from 1-10:30 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Both days may see some showers, with a 60% chance of precipitation, especially in the afternoon. Wednesday’s semifinal match will pit England vs. Argentina at downtown’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It’s already been a soggy start to the week. Rain moved in Sunday afternoon through Monday morning’s early hours. Some areas in DeKalb and Rockdale counties were warned of “40 to 50 mph wind, pea size hail and frequent cloud to ground lightning,” according to the Weather Service.

Sunday’s storms temporarily impacted some flights departing to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, and also disrupted midafternoon activities at EchoPark Speedway south of Atlanta, according to the speedway’s website.
