Find a fan. Slap on some sunscreen. Fill up a water bottle. This weekend is roasting, and the start of the work week will be, too.
Sunday and Monday look to be scorchers, with temperatures high enough to prompt the National Weather Service to extend an ongoing heat advisory to 8 p.m. Monday. The advisory area covers much of Middle and North Georgia, including metro Atlanta.
Highs were expected to reach the mid- to high 90s on the weekend , but the feels-like temperature, which factors in humidity, pushed the heat index value up to 109 in some places, the Weather Service said. Sunday’s high will approach 97, and Monday’s is even hotter at 98 in Atlanta.
The Weather Service warns the temperatures plus high humidity “may cause heat illnesses.” Try to limit vigorous outside activity and wear light and loose clothing, the agency advises.
The sweltering forecast follows a blazing hot Friday that triggered a heat advisory across the same wide swath of the state. The air temperature at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport hit 95 degrees Friday afternoon, according to Weather Service data.
“Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the agency said.
Expect high temperatures to remain in the mid- to upper 90s to start the next week, the Weather Service said. Monday could hit a high of 99 degrees, and Tuesday could reach 96, the agency forecasts.
