Firefighters in South Fulton battled a large fire at a warehouse complex near Union City, with a blaze that reached two-alarm status but was contained within a few hours.
A spokesman for the South Fulton Fire Department said in a statement that firefighters are still in a “defensive posture” and are still working the scene.
The Fairburn Fire Department, which also responded to the blaze, posted dramatic video Sunday evening of a huge, black plume of smoke billowing from a warehouse on Mallory Road.
The fire is about five miles west of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Channel 2 Action News and several other reporters near the fire on Sunday reported hearing loud booms or popping sounds coming from the warehouse. The South Fulton Fire spokesman acknowledged those reports, but said it wasn’t a cause for community concern.
“This is not a hazardous materials incident, the smoke is not toxic, and no evacuation has been ordered or deemed necessary,” the spokesman said.
The city of South Fulton issued a smoke advisory Sunday evening, though the statement specified that no toxic hazard had been identified.
“Heavy black smoke and falling debris are affecting portions of the surrounding area,” the statement said. “Residents and businesses in the impacted area should avoid approaching the scene and follow directions from public safety personnel.”
The business listed at the address of the fire is Providence Green LLC, which operates primarily as an electronics recycling business, according to its website.
Representatives for Providence Green and the Fairburn Fire Department did not respond to requests for more information on Sunday evening.
