Buford just beat Gainesville 39-19 on ESPN, and it might not even be the program’s biggest win of the night.
Five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster, the top-ranked overall senior in the country, announced a transfer to Buford on Saturday. On3’s Steve Wiltfong was the first to report the news.
Brewster will anchor a defense that graduated its top seven tacklers last year. The Wolves’ defense, led by AJC 2025 player of the year Tyriq Green, keyed a Class 6A state title and a consensus national championship.
Buford is known for its depth across its entire roster, but coach Bryant Appling did note that four freshmen played on the defensive line against Gainesville.
“We’re smaller than we were last year, not as highly talented as we were last year, and they heard that (stuff) all summer long,” Appling said. “So, they took it to heart.”
That didn’t stop the Wolves from holding the Red Elephants to 160 rushing yards on 31 carries.
“We’re a very young football team compared to where we were last year, so we’ve just got to keep chopping wood,” Appling said.
This is the first transfer of Brewster’s high school career, according to his HUDL bio. When he will first play for Buford is unclear. The Wolves’ next game is at Mallard Creek (N.C.) on Sept. 4.
Brewster had not started playing his senior season with Cedar Hill (Texas). The Longhorns’ first game is scheduled for Friday.
Brewster is profiled as an all-around defensive tackle, proficient in run defense and pass rush. Often compared to Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter, Brewster has also flashed elite athleticism as a ball carrier for Cedar Hill.
Currently the highest rated prospect from Texas in the last decade, Brewster can become Georgia’s fifth player to finish ranked No. 1 in 247Sports’ Composite Rankings in the last 15 years. He’d join Travis Hunter (Collins Hill), Trevor Lawrence (Cartersville), Trenton Thompson (Westover) and Robert Nkemdiche (Grayson).
Brewster said the transfer allowed him to graduate in December, according to On3. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder is committed to Texas Tech but hold dozens of offers from around the country, including Indiana, Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas. Florida, LSU and Texas are pushing to flip him.
