MLs acknowledged its mistake and apologized Thursday for posting a story on its website that reported that Atlanta United signed Kyogo Furuhashi on Wednesday.
The league’s statement: “Major League Soccer’s website mistakenly posted an article that named the wrong player as having signed with an MLS club. The article was immediately removed and corrected. MLS extends its sincere apologies to the impacted parties.”
Atlanta United actually had signed Cayman Togashi, announcing the signing at 4 p.m. The story by an MLS freelance reporter was posted at 4:36 p.m. It was taken down a few minutes later but not before aggregators such as Google had picked it up. Google was contacted, and the story was removed from its services.
The MLS story included a quote from Atlanta United, attributed to Director of Soccer Operations Chris Henderson, about Togashi.
Atlanta United reportedly is interested in signing Furuhashi, a striker at Celtic, but the two sides have yet to agree to terms.
Togashi is scheduled to arrive in Atlanta either Thursday or Friday and is scheduled to be at the team’s first training session Monday.
